What is Atrial Fibrillation?

  • Atrial fibrillation is the most common abnormal heart rhythm characterized by irregular heartbeat. In this situation, blood doesn't flow as well as it should from the top chambers of the heart to the lower chambers of the heart. Atrial fibrillation can lead to the development of blood clots that can cause strokes.
  • A stroke is a condition where a portion of the brain is injured or dies. Stroke is a serious medical condition that can lead to permanent injury, disability, or death.
  • Other medical conditions that raise your chance of stroke include diabetes, hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure), age greater 65, congestive heart failure, previous stroke, and female sex. Each person with atrial fibrillation will have a different chance of having a stroke or blood clot. Please consult with your atrial fibrillation doctor to know your individual risk.
